Read the following book review.  Does the review make you want to read the book?  Why or why not? What would make the book review more interesting?

How Angel Peterson Got His Name by Gary Paulsen
Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy. (November 2004)
As a teenage boy growing up. in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, Gary Paulsen--famed author of Hatchet (1986, MacMillan), Soldier's Heart (1998, Delacorte), and many more young adult novels--was never at a loss for ways to entertain himself. At age 13, he sealed himself in a wooden pickle barrel and attempted to shoot the 12-foot waterfall in town.

His problems started when he discovered the barrel wouldn't float but ended when the
barrel fell 12 feet only to land on a sharp boulder and splinter into assorted pieces.  Extreme sports were born. Paulsen and his friends did not have any of the expensive  and fancy gear available from catalogs and high-end stores that teenagers have today,  but they did have a veritable smorgasbord of adventure equipment available for next to nothing at the local army surplus store. Parachutes, rubber rafts, fighter plane target kites, possibly even whole jeeps (disassembled and packed in grease, according to popular legend) could be had cheaply there. Paulsen acknowledges the equipment as the genuine article from the battlefield; he even had a canteen with a bullet hole right through it

Angel Peterson, whose real name is (or was) Carl, got his sobriquet from remarks he made after breaking the land-speed record for snow skiing. Carl and the gang convince a local hot-rodder to pull Carl (about to become Angel) behind his souped-up car until they cruise on past the speed record and into the history and record books. The conditions are perfect on the day they make the attempt, but Carl has a slight equipment breakdown halfway through the run, and when the tow rope entangles the thumbs of his mittens (army surplus mittens, of course), he appears to give a permanent thumbs up to more speed. The boys break the record at 82'k miles per hour, and after they dig Carl out of the snow where he has been embedded, he tells them that he thought he heard the angels singing when he was careening at high speeds and. Paulsen or one
scared beyond belief. From that point on Carl would be known as Angel
of his buddies at one time or another attempted a litany of crazy stunts, including jumping off a water tower with an army surplus parachute (now called "base jumping" in extreme sports), getting airborne on an army surplus fighter plane target kite (hang gliding), skateboarding, bear wrestling, and many others.

It's hard to say which is funnier, the facts of the stories themselves or the way that Gary  Paulsen tells them. He has a way of putting the reader right there with him so that the sights and sounds come through clearly and loudly. Paulsen looks at adolescence with a large dose of good humor. We can almost see him shaking his head and laughing in disbelief at the insanity of teenage behavior as he dedicated the book to "all boys in their thirteenth year; the miracle is that we live through it" (p. v).

I don't think that i would want to read this book, the only sentence that interests me is "At age 13, he sealed himself in a wooden pickle barrel and attempted to shoot the 12-foot waterfall in town." but after that, everything turns boring.

  5. The review does not make me want to read the book because to me it was boring. Adding more details about what his parents thought about him doing the crazy and dangerous sports he did would make it more interesting.

The review made me want to read the book because its talking about how he loves adventure and stuff. I like adventure too and i think what he did was cool. If they added more things about the book like one event in the book that was interesting and maybe more people would read the book.

  7. I do not want to read the book based on the review. The book seems sort of like a kiddie book and i don't really like that kind of book.If the book had more of a hardship or something book to get over then the book review would appeal to me. :)

  8. The book review does't convince me to read the book. The book seems boring and i don't read boring books. If the book had more action or something with the paranormal it would be more interesting to me.

  15. I think this book review isn't that interesting because it doesn't catch the reader's attention so i wouldn't be interested in reading this book. I think if they added more interesting facts or made the review funnier i would probably read it.

This review doesn't make me want to read this book because it seems that it's targeted towards boys. It also doesn't seem like the type of book that would keep me interested because I like books that have a lot of drama in them and this book seems to just have a lot of action.

To make this review more interesting I would have added some the boy gets any injuries from doing these things because it would be nice to know if they survived without having to go through any pain.

I would want to read this book because Gary Paulsen is a very good author and all the books he eas ritten are really exciting Beacuse they are all beased on his life. The review tells that Carl or Angel was going to go land skiing but something terrible happened.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Eduardo Martinez

What would make the review better is if the review had more details of how bad the skiing was and how it could have turned out accoding to the main character's mind. Then not say what actually happened

  24. The review doesn't want to make me read the book because for 1: its for/dedicated to boys for 2: the review didn't make any sense. And for 3: It seems boring and only something guys would enjoy. What would make the book review more interesting is to include something a girl would understand, include how much boys have fun, include details in which the review would make sense (:

I would read this book after the review because it was kind of interesting to read, especally the angle part. Wath would make it more interesting is that it had more....interesting ... makes the review more exciting for the readers to read.

I dont think that i would read this book after reading the review because it doesnt look interesting to me. It seems more like a informational book then a fictional book and i dont like books like that.

The reviewwas boring to me and i don't like adventure books so i wouldn't want to read it. The person writting the review could have put more mystery into the review nd not explain things in such detail, like he did.

  28. I would not read this book because the review was boring and didnt have a lot going on to catch my attention. Adding more exciting things would make the book more interesting.

I wouldn't read this book because nothing was exciting or interesting in the review that made me want to read it. Also, this book seems boring. To make this book more interesting, the author should add more exciting details.

  30. I don't want to read this book based on this review because the review is confusing and rather long. I think that a review should be short and sweet and the author of this review added too many unnecessary information like Gary Paulsen's childhood. I think it would be better if the author didn't write so much about Gary Paulsen.

I wouldn't wasnt to read this book becuase it is about some suicidal idiot teenagers who just want to do stupid things for fun. I like to read about intersting things and the oly thing i found interesting was going over a waterfall in a barrel

  32. I think book sounds fun based on the review because me and my friends tend to do some really stupid life threatening things and I would love to hear about someone else trying it.

  35. The reveiw doesn't make me want to read the book even though it gave a lot of detail it was really boring. It took a long time to say everything about him liking adventure things and how he got his name. The book reveiw would be more interesting if the author gave detail that doesn't explain everything about the name.

I think the review could have been more interesting, because it did not convince me to want to read the book. I like action stories, but the review was dry and it was hard to understand. If the author of the book review added some suspense and cool scenes from the story, then I would probably be more inclined to want to read the book.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Based on the review i wouldnt want to read the book because its not interesting and its predictable and if it had a better story line or drama like bluford series books i would want to read the book

    ReplyDelete
  38. I read the first paragraph and some of the second paragraph of the review. I couldn't even finish it because it was that boring. The review wouldn't make me want to read the book. If the book is really like that then nothing would make the review better. It needs more suspense.

This review made me want to read the book. It told me that it was about little, interesting stories, and those interest me. I think a little more info would make this review better.

  40. Walter Gonzalez,

I would not want to read this book because the review is so boring and non-exciting. My favorite genre of books is suspense and scary so this book doesn't draw my attention. Adding more interesting and exciting parts of the book will might change my mind

  41. I think this book report was not entertaining. I would not read this book. How would Carl be considered an angel if he fell on snow it doesn't make sense. Adding more detail and exiting things would make the book better.

  42. I dont think i would like this book because I dont like reading biographies or any non fiction books also I dont like extream sports so this book is not intresting to me.

  43. JThis artly/ review is boring, yet its not the story its self I wouldn't. Want to read it. If someone is going to read itfi suggest reading it at night it would help you sleep, for it to grab y attention it would need mystery, someone getting killed or atleast lost -__- .

  45. I would not want to read this book because it doesnt have enough details on the effect of calling Carl the name Angel. The review needs more opinions on what other people think about it and details on what really happened.

  46. I think that it would make teenage boys want to read this because they would probably be interested in what Gary Paulson thinks about teenagers. it wouldnt be a good report to persuade girls to read the book.

    ReplyDelete
  47. No because i only like to read books about romance drama, mystery, and or suspense. And if the review had more action in it i would read it. Or if it had someone getting killed in a accident. :P
